A man stormed the Gombe branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria on Thursday with sacks of old N1000 notes totaling N50 million.
The sacks of money were carried by young men accompanying the man who was dressed in kaftan and cap to match.
This comes hours after President Buhari announced that the old N500 and N1000 notes have ceased to be legal tenders.A video of the incident shows the men struggling with the bags of cash as they approached the bank to deposit the money. They were queried why they were just turning in the old cash in their possession now by some people believed to be officials of the bank.
The owner of the money explained in Hausa why they kept so much money at home. He claimed to be a flour merchant at a popular market in Gombe.
According to the man who interpreted what he said into English, the merchant said he deals with lots of cash on a daily basis and banked a minimum of one billion naira every month
