Few months ago we served you the news about Minister of Culture and Tourism, High Chief Edem Duke’s business, Mirrage Hotel, Calabar been rocked by crisis ranging from nonpayment of staffs salary, poor management of the building amidst other predicament.
This time, information at our disposal has revealed that the minister has fallen into the ‘bad book’ of President Jonathan who is presently shopping for replacement for the ministerial seat. It was gathered that the inner cabinet to the presidency are on the lookout for a competent hand as it’s been alleged that Minister Edem Duke’s incompetency has come to the fore following the sack of one of his top shot, Mr Martin Adaji, the appointment of Ms Chika Balogun as Special Assistant to the minister and DG of National Institute of Hospitality and Tourism Studies (Ms Chika Balogun used to be a staff of Edem Duke’s company), the appointment of a 60 year old retired civil servant Mrs Dayo Keshi, as DG of National Council for Arts and Culture, all practices that shows the ministers self-centeredness.
Those in the know alleged that Mr Martin Adaji, artistic director of the National Troupe was sack by the president following the complaint from Minister Edem Duke. The reason for the sack was later discovered when the minister submitted the name of Mr. Akin Adejumo, as the new director.
Akin, a fine artist, based in the UK is a son to Dr. Franklin Adejuwon who shares over thirty years friendship with Edem Duke.  Those close to the Tourism ministry divulged that Dr. Adejuwon has pressurized Duke to use his influence and connections to secure a job for his son who doesn’t belong to any theatre association in Nigeria nor known by the practitioners.
The new director who is yet to resume according to sources has exposed the incompetence of Edem Duke. It was gathered that all that the former director used to do for the ministry couldn’t be done even by Minister of his new director.   Among many of the former director, Adaji’s achievements are, he is a lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State, a play creation major for University of Ibadan, and has held many artistic positions.
With his giant strides at the ministry and looking forward to the renewal of his appointment, Adaji was sacked by Edem Duke because he is aware of the loyalty given to him by staffs of the ministry and this led to a peaceful protest by the staffs of the ministry and theater practitioners. Â The protest got the attention of the president Jonathan who eventually summoned Edem Duke and scolded him for his incompetence with a treat that his days are numbered in the office as minister.
