Peter-Leslie-CarterThere was tragedy on Tuesday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos when the British deputy high commissioner to Nigeria, Peter Leslie Carter slumped and died.

Carter, 58, posted to Nigeria two years ago, slumped at the arrival hall about 3:50pm after disembarking from a United Airlines flight which brought him from Houston, Texas. Shortly his arrival, he was seen to be clutching his chest and crying for help, but could not receive help because people feared it might be as a result of ebola virus infection.

The Port Health Services of the Federal Ministry of health said “efforts were made to administer oxygen, while a second doctor was called and suction applied via a Suction machine to clear the airway.” It said Carter “suffered a cardio-pulmonary arrest.  Staff of the British High Commission in Lagos later arrived the airport after they were informed in the evening.

Mr. Yakubu Dati, the spokesman for the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria and the Police Command at the airport confirmed the death on Tuesday evening. There was no statement from the British High Commission on Tuesday.
